The Wisconsin DNR is hiring two LTE (Limited Term Employee) – Forestry Technician- Advanced positions.
One position will be stationed in Black River Falls, WI. The second position will be stationed in either Mercer or Mellen, WI.

This Forestry Technician position will be working independently; planning and implementing forest management activities on public lands. This position will be used to meet unmet work priorities. Most tasks are fieldwork with a compliment of office follow-up reporting. This temporary position is anticipated to work 40 hours per week for approximately 6 months out of the year (1039 hours). Some flexibility on total hours and schedule may be available after initial onboarding.
55% - Complete detailed forest reconnaissance and update the WI Forest Inventory and Reconnaissance (WISFIRS) data base.
a. Gather detailed stand information including tree species, heights, volumes, site index, habitat type, cultural recommendations and alternatives, management recommendations and silvicultural prescriptions.
b. Become fluent in entering data into WISFIRS and running all essential reports needed to manage the forest.
c. Utilize GIS and GPS mapping tools including: QGIS and Avenza maps.
35% - Assist with planning and design of timber sales on both State and County properties.
a. Establish timber sales in accordance with handbook and agreed upon standards.
b. Develop and implement appropriate silvicultural prescriptions to reach objectives.
c. Designated timber for harvesting including: cutting boundaries, property lines, and individual tree marking.
d. Conduct volume cruises and appraisals according to Departmental and County standards.
e. Prepare maps and timber documents in accordance with State and County procedures.
10% - Timber sale administration and equipment maintenance
a. Assist Forestry staff with administration of active timber sales.
b. Conduct general maintenance and upkeep of Forestry-owned and operated equipment.
c. Coordination of fleet vehicle maintenance and repairs with local vendors.
These positions pay between $20.50 - $22.50 per hour and is in pay schedule and range 06-14. Compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.
This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position and will not automatically lead to permanent state employment or be entitled to the same benefits as permanent employees.

a. Has established a residence, as defined in s. 6.10(1), in this state not less than 10 days earlier;
b. Has resided in this state for not less than a total of one year out of the immediately preceding 5 years;
c. Is eligible to register to vote in this state; or
d. Is the spouse of a person meeting the requirements of par. (a), (b), or (c).” s.230.03(12), Wis. Stats.
